Utility Fog

Utility fog is the name given to a futuristic technology, enabled by advanced nanoengineering, in which swarms of invisible nanobots pervade our environment and offer up various services seemingly out of thin air as needed. Such services might include floating video screens and portals to vast arrays of information, communication devices or personalized transportation systems.

This kind of capability requires major advances in both nanoscience and nanoengineering and is, in most mainstream assessments, either many decades away or completely unrealizable due to environmental, security or technological constraints. Nevertheless it is a useful concept as it represents some of the more futuristic thinking about what advanced molecular manufacturing might make possible.
